Executive orders for full pardons of convicts, 1931-1938.

"In all cases, except treason and impeachment, the governor has power, after conviction, and not otherwise, to grant reprieves, commutations, paroles and pardons, and to remit fines and foreitures..." (Ala. Code, Chapter 202, Section 5127 [1923]). The governor may grant a full pardon with the restoration of civil and political rights. This series consists of executive orders for the restoration of civil and political rights. Each order lists the prisoner's name, county where the prisoner was convicted, his crime, date convicted, his sentence, and contains a statement approving a full pardon with the restoration of civil and political rights, the governor's signature, the date, and the attesting mark of the secretary of state. This series deals with criminals tried in the federal courts for violation of the prohibition law. These records were created under the Board of Pardons (1901-1935), the Parole Bureau (1935-1939), during the administration of Governors Benjamin Meek Miller (1931-1935), and Bibb Graves (1935-1939).
